Draw Close to God and He Will Draw Close to You...

Simple, yet profound…draw close to God and He will draw close to you. This very short verse provides both precept and promise. The precept is that the closeness of God occurs in response to something we do. The promise is that when we draw near to God, HE WILL draw near to us… no room for debate, discussion, disagreement, or negotiation. Consider with me for a few minutes two important questions: Why and How?

Why should every child of God draw near to God? The absence of the desire to live ever closer to God signifies that something is wrong. Sadly, far too many Christians live with the attitude of how far from God can I live and still make heaven? How little can I go to church, read God’s Word, honor God with my choices and still not go to hell? That would be like the husband or wife that asks how unfaithful to their spouse they can be and still stay married. Something is wrong with the husband or wife that lives that way and there is something very wrong with the Christian that has no interest in getting as close to God as possible. Why should you or I want and do everything possible to draw closer to God? Because He is good and He loves us like no other person can or will love us, in our life. Jesus laid down His life for me. God Has everything I need to live the best, most blessed and impactful life possible. Why should I draw near to God? Because the times we live in (2 Timothy 3:1-5) demand that I get as close to God as I can. These are not the times for trying to walk with God and yet dance with the devil. Hear me today, death or the Rapture will happen, and it will happen sooner than we think. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Why should I draw near to God? I MUST…you MUST draw near to God for the sake of our children and grandchildren. If you and I want to leave our children and grandchildren with something more valuable than money…. we MUST leave them a clear, solid, consistent example of how to live close to God.

How does a person draw near to God? I want to say it up front: drawing near to God is the right thing to do but, it’s not an easy thing to do. If it were easy, everybody would be doing it but, the sad truth is all Christians are not drawing close to God. How does a Christian draw closer and closer to God? The answer is the same today as it was twenty (20) years ago and it’s the same as it will be twenty (20) years from now: spend time everyday alone with God, reading God’s Word, worshiping, and praying. People hungry for more of God do whatever it takes to draw closer to Him. Determination and discipline are required but, the result is worth the effort for the promise is that He will draw near to us.

I don’t want to just be a church attender going through the motions of worship each week. I need more than that and the fact is you need more than that. I don’t want to live somewhere on the perimeters of His Presence and Provision. I encourage you today to embrace this amazing promise of God: Draw nigh to Him and He will draw nigh to you.
